Q. Should we answer the questions with what we know about OS theory or by trying things out on the machines?
A. Both. For example, for question 4 "By how much must each buffer overflow before there is a problem?" you should give both a theoretical minimum and the actual observed minimum on the gpel machine you are using in the lab. (These values may be the same or different.)
