Welcome to cs3113. If you got this far, you are in good shape. Prof. Hougen, 23 August 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will not be available for my office hour today. However, I will make it up tomorrow from 3:30 - 4:30. Prof. Hougen, 27 August 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will need to move my office hours for this week. My Tuesday office hour will be from 11:00 until 12:00 and my Thursday office hour will be moved to Friday from 2:00 until 3:00. Prof. Hougen, 2 September 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I made an error today in class when I told you your passwords for your UNIX accounts. Your default password begins with "cs" but is otherwise the same as indicated. Please log in and change your password as soon as possible. As mentioned in class today, I will be running a script after class on Thursday to find any accounts with unchanged passwords. You need to change your password before then. Prof. Hougen, 3 September 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first programming assignment has been added to the class web pages. Prof. Hougen, 11 September 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have added a FAQ on using the CS UNIX machines to the class web pages. Prof. Hougen, 19 September 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The second programming assignment has been added to the class web pages. Prof. Hougen, 26 September 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT REMINDER: As announced multiple times in class, tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 9) is your first exam. It will be open book and open notes but you need to ensure that you have your own copies of these items - you will NOT be allowed to pass anything to other class members during the exam. Also recall that use of electronic devices during the test will NOT be allowed: If you have notes on computer, you must print them out in order to use them during the exam. If you have a cell phone, you must turn it off (or, better yet, leave it at home) during the exam. Also, as a reminder for those of you who have asked for old exams to study from, please note that all of the old exams and solutions that I have, with the exception of exam 3 from last fall, are on the web site from the class last fall. I will start to copy them to this semester's site, since students have started to ask for them, but there is no reason that you can't access them where they currently are! Prof. Hougen, 9 Oct. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTICE: I filed midsemester grade reports for you before I decided to adjust the exam 1 scores. For this reason, some of you may receive grade reports warning you of low grades that show lower grades than you are actually currently earning. You should be able to calculate your actual grades by using the exam 1 adjustment that we discussed in class today (you get back 1/3 of missed points) and using the syllabus to determine the percent of your class grade for each assignment. Prof. Hougen, 22 Oct. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have added instruction for accessing the gpel machines using X from an MS Windows machine to the class web pages. Please note that I am simply passing on information I have received on how to do this - I have not tried this out myself. Prof. Hougen, 22 Oct. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The solution key to exam 1 has been added to the class web pages. Prof. Hougen, 11 Nov. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will be switching my office hours for next week. On Tuesday, Nov. 19, I will have office hours from 11:00 - 12:00 and on Thursday, Nov. 21, I will have office hours from 2:00 - 3:00. Prof. Hougen, 11 Nov. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Project 3 has been added to the class web pages. Please note new due date and percentage of grade. Prof. Hougen, 14 Nov. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- My apologies for missing class and office hours on Tuesday, due to illness. Unfortunately, I will have to miss both class and office hours again today for the same reason. I will make up office hours as soon as possible, to help you with your programs. I will announce those make-up hours in the MOTD. Prof. Hougen, 21 Nov. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- My apologies again for missing class and office hours last week, due to illness. I will make up the missed office hours as soon as possible, to help you get your projects completed on time. The make-up times will be as follows: Today: Monday Nov. 25 3:00-4:00 Tomorrow: Tuesday Nov. 26 11:00-12:00 I will also hold my regular office hours tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 2:00 to 3:00. Finally, I will hold a "bonus" office hour on Monday, Dec. 2, from 1:00 until 2:00. Prof. Hougen, 25 Nov. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As announced in class last Tuesday, the due date for project 3 has been moved back from Tuesday, Dec. 3 to Thursday, Dec. 5. The project is still due before the beginning of class (9:00 am) for the electronic submission. I encourage you to get project 3 done by the original due date if possible, however, so that you can get started on project 4 right away. Prof. Hougen, 30 Nov. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Project 4 has been added to the class web pages. Prof. Hougen, 3 Dec. 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT REMINDER: Your final exam is 8:00 - 10:00 on Monday, Dec. 16, in our normal class room. The exam, like the others in the course, will be open book and open notes but no electronic devices will be permitted in the testing area. This exam will cover signals, pipes and FIFOs, sockets, threads, and deadlock. Because of missed class time, we will not cover the IPC methods found in chapter 8 of the Haviland textbook. Be sure to study from chapters 6, 7, and 10 from Haviland and chapters 10 and 15 from Nutt. In addition, be sure to study the bit on signals in Nutt (the exact page numbers vary between the 2nd Edition and the 2nd Edition Lab Update) and from chapter 9 in Nutt, the parts relating to IPC (again, the exact page numbers vary between the 2nd Edition and the 2nd Edition Lab Update).
