The EDLAB is scheduled to open Monday September 9th at 8:30 AM. Please let students know what their username and passwords are (see below). Also, direct them to the edlab homepage for important information: http://www-edlab.cs.umass.edu/ The current hours are: M-Th 8:30AM-11:30PM Fri 8:30AM-7:30PM Sat 12noon-7:30PM Sun 12noon-11:30PM The Linux workstations are : machines: elnux0 - elnux34 (a separate message will be sent about the new Windows EDLAB in LGRT 215) Course Setup:: (we will use cs287 as an example:) *****All student class work should be done in the course subdirectory!! (cd cs287) *****All course common files should go in the common directory!! (/courses/cs200/cs287/cs287) All students will have an account. Most usernames will be first character of their first name appended by their lastname (truncated at 8 characters)- Example: tkellogg - for Terrie Kellogg. If this combination is not unique the user will need to get their username from the roster sent to the professor. Updated student lists will be sent after we add accounts. The initial passwords will be their 9 digit assigned Student ID numbers (unless they had an account last semester, then it will be whatever they set it to last semester). Each student will have an account with their home directory on the grad partitions. The students are all in the group grad. Their login will source the course .login and .cshrc scripts (/courses/cs200/cs287/cs287/.login, .cshrc). They will also have links to the courses that they take. A student in cs287 would type: cd cs287 to get to their course directory. This is where they should do all cs287 work!!! Each student in the class will have a directory under the top level course directory /courses/cs200/cs287. The directories have group access only (cs287). The instructor (and TA if there is one) are the only people in that group. All the common course related material should go in the /courses/cs200/cs287/cs287 directory. Make sure the files you put in the course common directory have other read and/or execute permissions or the student will get permission errors. There will be a mailing list in the edlab for each class, for example mail to cs287@edlab-mail.cs.umass.edu will go to each person in that class, plus the professor and TA. There is an edlab broadcast mailing list for all accounts in the edlab : broadcast@edlab-mail.cs.umass.edu Handouts and notes should be distributed in hard copy form. Do not have the students print out handouts or lecture notes! There are too many students and too few printers for this. **Reminder - these accounts have disk and printer quotas set up. The print quota is 300 pages initially + 200 pages per class. Please send mail to system@cs.umass.edu if you have any questions or problems.
