Announcements


  • Information for Dr. Carsten Görg's seminar can be downloaded (15M) here. The seminar will be held at the National Weather Center on December 11th at 10:00am in room #1350.
  • Mohammed Atiquzzaman has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Network and Computer Applications
  • Dr. Varahan and Dr. Atiquzzaman received the "Alumni Teaching Award" for Fall 2007. Dr. Varahan's award was for 'Scientific Computing I" and Dr. Atiquzzaman's was for "Computer Organization".
  • Dr. Krishnaiyan Thulasiraman has been selected to receive the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the IIT Madras. Dr. Thulasiraman with the award.
  • Two new faculty postions are available beginning August 15th 2008.
  • The School of Computer Science sponsored a team to do public service work at The Big Event on April 5, 2008 . Barbara Bledsoe was the team leader. The team helped Middle Earth Childcare by building sand boxes, painting rooms, and cleaning.
  • Andrew H. Fagg, Amy McGovern, and Dean Hougen have received a $310,952 Research Experiences for Undergraduates  Site award from the National Science Foundation entitled "Integrated Machine Learning Systems".  Applications for 2008 are now being accepted.  The full consideration deadline is March 14th.
  • The Computer Science Graduate Student Association's Spring Research Conference will take place on Saturday, April 19th, at the Stephenson Research & Technology Center. It will begin at 10 AM, and presentations will be done by 4PM. Cookies and drinks will be provided throughout the conference, and there will be a lunch break at 11:45 AM, which will be Hideaway Pizza provided by RiskMetrics.
  • Dr. Le Gruenwald was recognized as a distinguished alumni at the 40th anniversary celebration of Computer Science at SMU.
  • The School of Computer Science Competitive Programming Team Cognitive Hemorrhage placed 13th in the 2007 ACM South Central USA Programming Contest on November 3, 2007.  Congratulations to Caleb Eggensperger, Daniel Parrott, Sean Lavelle, and coach Dr. Rex Page!  See the full standings here
  • Dr. Andrew Fagg has received a NASA/Epscor travel grant on "Learning Grasp
    Affordances for Control of Humanoid Robot Grasping and Manipulation".
  • Professor Mohammed Atiquzzaman has been named to the editorial board of the International Journal of Communication Systems.
  • Dr. Krishnaiyan Thulasiraman  has been named 2007 AAAS Fellow.  For distinguished contributions for over four decades to diverse areas in the field of circuits, systems, and computing, emphasizing graph-theoretic modeling and algorithmic approaches.
  • On Wednesday, November 7th at 6:00 p.m. In Sarkey's Energy Center, Room M204, the Computer Science Board of Advisors will conduct a panel discussion.  The panel will share insights into what to expect when joining the work-force, how to prepare while you are still in school, and tips for advancing once you start.  A Q&A session will follow. 
  • The Computer Science Research Poster Session will be held December 7th 2007, in Sarkey's Conference rooms  A and B from 2:00 - 5:00pm.
  • Dr. Subhash Kak, Chairman, Department of Computer Science from Oklahoma State University, will present a seminar titled, “Is Quantum the Holy Grail of Computing?”, on Friday, December 7, 2007, from 10:30 – 11:30a.m. in the Dea's Conference room in ( CEC 100 ) , in the Carson Engineering Center.
  • The School of Computer Science finished first in the Dunk Tank competition at the College of Engineering Fall Festival on September 7, 2007.  Dr. Dean Hougen endured 162 ball tosses, and was dunked innumerable times, while making $54.00 for the OU student chapter of the ACM and the OU robotics club.
  • Dr. Terran Lane from the Department of Computer Science at the Univeristy of New Mexico will present "Scientific Data Mining: The Discovery and Use of Complex Networks in Neuroscience and Genomics", Friday, September 28th, 2:30pm in Carson Engineering Center, Room 100. 
  • The Third Annual Research Experiences Symposium will be held Saturday, September 29th, 9:00-5:00. Learn about:
    • Cutting-edge research in computer science, engineering, and meteorology, with a focus on embedded machine learning systems

  • Bion makes Vision Magazine sit up and listen.
  • Bion is on exhibit at Stephenson Research and Technology Center through August 2007.  Public viewing is during daytime hours and from 7:00 - 10:00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Bion is also featured in the Oklahoma Heritage Society's documentary, "Oklahoma: Spirit of the People".
  • The University of Oklahoma's, School of Computer Science ACM-W chapter has been officially chartered as of April 24, 2007.
  • Come celebrate the end of the school year with CS at Reaves Park on April 27, 5:30-7:30.  We will have free food and games and all are welcome.
  • CS faculty members Amy McGovern, Andrew Fagg, and Dean Hougen will present overviews of their research at the first Stephenson Research and Technology Center (SRTC) Interdisciplinary Mini-Symposium to be held on Friday, February 23 from 12 to 5 pm in the SRTC atrium.
  • Professor Hong Zhu of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Fudan University in China will present a seminar entitled "Traversing the Machining Graph" on Friday, February 23, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm in CEC 441.
  • The Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site on Embedded Machine Learning Systems is currently accepting applications for this year's program to start in March. The deadline for full consideration is February 1st.
  • Computer Science Seminar: Friday, January 26th, 2:30. James Rebesco, Northwestern University. Extracting nonlinear, low-dimensional task representations from neural ensembles
  • The Computer Science Research Poster Session will be December 8th, 2-5, in SEC Atrium WEST. More than 40 computer science students will present their research work from the Fall Semester.
  • The Computer Science Department will host a Research Experiences Symposium on October 28th.
  • The Computer Science Graduate Student Association hosted the Second Annual Computer Science Research Conference on April 1.

  • Computer Science announces new PhD fellowships
  • Computer Science is honored to receive a $250,000 gift from David Franke and Trilogy Software Inc. of  Austin for the Dr. David Franke Endowed Professorship.
Students
  • OU Computer Science undergrads Caleb Eggensperger, Sean Lavelle, and Peter Reid, competing under their team name, Irony Barbecue, placed ninth of sixty teams from colleges throughout Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana in the 2008 ACM Programming Comptetition, October 18. Results.
  • OU graduate Anita Vallur was nominated for Rookie of the Year at National Instruments in 2007.
  • CS Minor David John Gagne II won OU's Rita H. Lottinville prize.
  • CS junior Susan Collins received the AFCEA ROTC Scholarship. This scholarship rewards both academic excellence and outstanding leadership.
  • Computer Science senior, Adrianna Krueger,  saves young boy's life.
  • CS Graduates (2005) Andres Hill and Mike Prosser were both nominated for Rookie of the Year at National Instruments.
  • Di Wang has been awarded an OU Computer Science PhD Fellowship.
  • Michael Tweeten and William Dabney earn "Outstanding Seniors" in Computer Science for the 2006-2007 academic year.
  • William Dabney received an honorable mention in the 2007 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
  • Two CS students have won awards in the IBM Accessibility ODF Coding Challenge. Chase Pritchett won one of the two grand prizes: a Lenovo ThinkPad and a trip to Los Angeles to attend the "Technology & Persons with Disabilities Conference", and Chris Humphreys won one of the ten runner up prizes: an Apple iPod Nano.
  • Dennis Ferron, a participant in our Research Experiences for Undergraduates site on Embedded Machine Learning Systems, has been awarded a prestigious Oklahoma NASA Space Grant Internship at Johnson Space Center for Spring Semester 2007.
  • CS Seniors William Dabney and Charles de Granville received an honorable mention in the 2007 CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Award competition.
  • Daniel Parrott receives IEEE Computer Society award at the 2006 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
  • Jason Black is one of the first recipients of the OU Computer Science PhD Fellowships.
  • Kyle Abbott and Charles de Granville win the Outstanding Computer Science Senior Award for 2006.
  • Computer science PhD student Nan Jiang named student of the month by the Lions Club of Norman. Her research interests include data streams, wireless sensor networks, data mining, and wireless databases.
Faculty
  • The University of Oklahoma's Instructional Innovation program has awarded Dr. Yifei Dong and Dr. Xun Ge (Department of Educational Psychology) funding for their ongoing project, "OpenSEED: Empower Software Engineering Education Using Open Source Software Development Approach".
  • Dr. Mohammed Atiquzzaman won the "Regent's Award for Outstanding Research and Creativity".
  • Dr. S. Lakshmivarahan was recognized this month for his 28 years of excellent service to the University of Oklahoma.
  • Dr. Sudarshan Dhall was recognized this month for his 27 years of excellent service to the University of Oklahoma.
  • A new book co-authored by two OU CS professors S. Lakshmivarahan and Sudarshan Dhall and John Lewis of the National Severe Storms Laboratory and has been named by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (NOAA OAR) as the only book to win an OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper Award in 2007. The book, Dynamic Data Assimilation: A Least Squares Approach, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2006.
  • Andrew Fagg and Adam Brown are showing Bion at Ball State University through March 11th.
  • Henry Neeman has been named as one of the High Performance Computing Wire's "People to Watch 2006".
  • Dr. K. Thulasiraman has been selected to receive the, "2006 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Technical Achievement Award".
  • Andrew Fagg and Adam Brown will exhibit Bion at the Living Arts of Tulsa from September 7th through the 28th
  • Adam Brown gave an interview on NPR last week regarding the Bion project.
  • Andrew Fagg (Computer Science) and Adam Brown (Art) are exhibiting a sensor network-based art installation. Bion is being shown at Archival to Contemporary: Six Decades of the Sculptors Guild. This art exhibit is presented by the New York Sculptors Guild at the Hillwood Art Museum of Long Island University (Brookville, New York).
  • Associate Professor Dr. Dee Wu from the Department of Radiological Sciences has been appointed as adjunct Professor of Computer Science. Dr. Wu's research interests include functional and molecular imaging, and 3D visualization.
