If you are considering to register for CS 5990 Independent Studies under my supervision (Section 17), please read this page first.

General information

CS 5990 Independent Studies is a good supplement to the regular curriculum for the students to acquire broader knowledge. Appropriately executed, it will mutually benefit the faculty advisor and the students in exploring the research frontier and in establishing a working relationship.

Department Policy: Under the current degree requirement, only up to 3 credits of Independent Study can be counted for MSc degree, and up to 6 credits for PhD degree.

Procedures

  1. Proposal: The interested student should choose a topic of my interest, and write a one-page proposal to explain: motivation: why this topic is also his/her interest, qualification: what prior experience can benefit this research, goals: what will be achieved after one semester, and literature: very brief review of 3-5 related papers. I will sign the enrollment permission if I am satisfied with the proposal.
  2. Progress: During the semester, we hold weekly meetings which lasts for one to two hours; the actual length depends on the number of people involved. In the meeting we mainly discuss the findings in the previous week. Periodically the student gives semi-formal presentations.
  3. Products: By the end of the semester, the student shall write a a survey report on the studied literature and give a formal presentation with prepared slides. Depending on the nature of the studied topic, a prototype may need to be developed.
